Japan

Sources: United Nations Statistics Division and World Bank

Japan is the 10th most populated country in the world with a population of about 128 million inhabitants, while the size of the country is quite small. Japan is a big economic power in the world, measuring with GDP at PPP the world third largest economy. This is because of the high GDP on a per capita basis. The unemployment rate is quite low, while the economic activity rate is not that good.

Japanese have the longest life expectancy in the world. This may partly be explained by the excellent drinking water and sanitation coverage and the low HIV rate. However, the air pollution is quite heavy, as Japan has high emissions of greenhouse gases. The school life expectancy is very long in Japan, while the tertiary education enrolment ratio is not that good.
